About

Thousands of people at 20 events in beautiful landscapes across the UK

For Green Space Dark Skies, thousands of people from all paths in life are becoming Lumenators, each carrying a low impact light into the landscape. Together, we are experiencing beautiful green spaces across the UK. Imagine thousands of lights making patterns on mountains, lakes and moorland across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. These lights are sensitive to the night-time environment.

Led by outdoor arts experts Walk the Plank, 20 events are taking place from April to September 2022. We are taking the nation on a journey through our National Parks and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONBs), to a climactic closing moment across the UK that will be broadcast to millions. These are places that anyone can visit, any time, for free. But we know not everybody feels welcome there. Walk the Plank is inviting people who don’t usually experience the countryside to take part and to share their stories – before, during and after.

You can join alone, with family and friends or in an organised group, all for free.

Green Space Dark Skies is commissioned by UNBOXED: Creativity in the UK, the ground-breaking UK-wide celebration of creativity in 2022, one of ten large-scale projects designed to celebrate science, technology, engineering, the arts and maths. Walk the Plank is working with Siemens and partners to create something that’s never been done before –  special low impact lights that the Lumenators carry, using state-of-the-art technology.

Green Space Dark Skies will be carbon positive, ultimately removing more carbon from the atmosphere than it produces.

The aim is to empower everyone involved to make a difference locally. In the face of the climate emergency, thousands of Lumenators will become caretakers of nature for the future.

Reconnecting people to their local landscape plays a pivotal role in looking after one’s physical and mental health as well as their emotional wellbeing.
