Events

Join us to create magical, memorable moments outdoors

All of the events that took place as part of Green Space Dark Skies are listed below. From April to September, thousands of people became Lumenators, carrying low impact lights at National Parks and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) across the UK at dusk. Click on the map to discover more about each event across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The Finale was the exciting culmination of Green Space Dark Skies’ series of 20 events across the UK, and was broadcast in a BBC Countryfile special in October and is now available on iplayer.

The Finale took place in September at the four highest mountains in our four nations: Scafell Pike in England, Ben Nevis in Scotland, Yr Wyddfa/Snowdon in Wales and Slieve Donard in Northern Ireland.

A ‘Lumenator’ is our name for somebody who carried a low impact light for Green Space Dark Skies. Together, thousands of Lumenators helped us to create magical moments in some of the UK’s beautiful green spaces at dusk. There were 20 different events across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

To protect these amazing places and to make sure we left no trace of our time there, the exact locations were only revealed to the people who registered to become a Lumenator. There were no spectators and numbers were limited so only those who signed up to take part were there in person on the day.

Walk the Plank worked with each National Park and Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to create these events. Each event depended on the confirmation of landowner permissions, approval of event plans and local stakeholder engagement.

Lumenators were safe, looked after, and guided on their journey. They only needed to spend a few hours at the location on the day, and there were fun things to do. It was a chance to meet new people and be part of something truly special. Together, we made history.

Films

We are sharing films from every event, as well as stories, photos, music and more. If you took part as a Lumenator, or just want to see what Green Space Dark Skies got up to, be sure to visit our film pages.

Illuminated kayaks might create circles on a lake. Imagine glowing dancers and tractors tracing patterns across fields. During Ramadan, children carrying their lights might move around the surface of the earth in a game which creates pin pricked patterns. Constellations in our skies could be mapped onto the landscape below.
