New banner commission inspired by poet John Clare

Artist Chris Alton was commissioned to create two new banners inspired by John Clare’s poem – The Mores.

In The Mores, Clare, one of the Romantic poets, presents the natural idyll of a landscape before enclosure.

He wrote the poem two hundred years ago in lament of the enclosure of the commons: between 1809 and 1820. Acts of enclosure granted landowners permission to fence fields, heaths and woods, excluding the people who had worked and played in them…which led to the loss of livelihoods as well as the loss of community access to our common land.
